Treating Dry Skin

Winter is the harshest time on our skin. Lots of people are plagued with itchy, flaking, cracked, rough and painful skin. Running out to the local boutique to grab the most well known healing lotions and creams to help get rid of the irritation and heal the roughness for moments of relief. Unfortunately many people are passing up on the most needed and inexpensive methods to not only get the help you need for dry, chapped and cracked skin, but also help prevent it.

We are made up primarily of water. For some reason, in the shor, cold months of the year, we miss the need for drinking enough water. During the summer, when we are sweating and exerting ourselves, we realize that we need to drink water to replace the water as we have lost. In the winter the cold air does much the same to our body. It sucks that water right out of us. This then dries out our skin, leaving it dry and itchy. Making sure that you are taking in 8 to 10 glasses of water a day will improve the chances in the battle over dry and rough skin. Use this one tip for the next two weeks and you will begin to see a real improvement in your skin in just a few days.

Staying with the necesity of moist skin, a good moisturizing lotion is also a good idea. Make sure that you are buying one that is appropriate for your skin type so that you are not going to end up with oily skin. I recommend a cream more than a lotion in the cold, since a cream is thicker and more protective of the skin. Also spend a minute to read the label. The cream or lotion that you use in the summer probably won’t be appropriate in the winter. Stay away from a cream or lotion with alcohol in the first few ingredients, as alcohol is a drying agent.

Dress the right way in the cold. Don’t poo poo this, consider it carefully. Any bare skin that you have increases the opportunity that the cold air has to remove the moisture from your skin. Try to layer your clothes and let that next to the skin layer be clothes that are made of cotton. Cotton will let you skin breathe, will keep you warm and won’t irritate your skin.

By heeding these three basic steps, you will not only get a big improvement in that annoying dry skin, but you will prevent your skin from becoming dry. Drinking plenty of water, the right moisturizing cream for your skin type and the right clothing and you will have healthy, well hydrated, comfortable skin.
