Getting yourself on a diet program, get lean and loose some weight is your own business. No one has any rights to express open opinions about your looks or your habits. Behind a “nice” and “I want to help” mask, many twisted comments may hurt you or try to raise a barrier between you and your own goals.

“I love your courage to wear tight clothes. I wish I had it”
“I know a physician who will get you fit in two weeks. Let me get her number”
Have you heard those? Friends, your partner, siblings and parents, although well intentioned, may hand out “advises” “just to help” when, subtly, they are giving you instructions and beating your self esteem. For good or worse, you belong to a family and a community. Overweight and obesity are conditions where others tend to blame victims and look at them as responsible. Other diseases as alcoholism and drug addictions get more understanding from close friends and relatives. As the conditions have risen to endemic proportions, more social setbacks will appear.
People tend to have a say about weight loss, particularly when overweight is present in somebody close. In many cases they mean good, but their effect can be devastating and ineffective. In extreme cases they may trigger opposite reactions, because loosing weight goes far beyond technicalities such as calorie counting or healthy meals choice, getting into the realm of psychological and behavioral issues. Few have that in mind when advising or judging other’s appearance.
Loosing excess weight and burning excess fat is extremely important for your health and your looks, of course. If you are reading this article you have all the intention and drive to do something about it. But you and only you have the control and the power to take educated decisions, because only you can take action upon them and enjoy or face the consequences.
Other’s support can be a crucial help when starting a weight loss program. If you are about to get into one, or just thinking about it, talk to the people who love you and is able to provide sincere support for your decisions and actions. Talking about it, remind them of the changing process you are about to experience. Change implies sacrifice and willpower, so their support should include encouragement and empathy and avoid negative criticism.
More than your physical appearance, the most important aspect of the change is regain control and feel as the beautiful, smart and great person you are. If you have the power to change, you belong to the privileged few.
Getting the right attitude and taking control, directing your mindset toward empowerment will make the means and ways much easier.
